Wow I didn't realize how long it has been since I posted. My blog got pushed to the wayside for a while because I have been insanely busy these past few months. It has been a very hectic time in my family. We found out that my Aunt had Stage Four colon cancer in November but the last few months were extremely rough as her condition worsened. We made numerous trips to South Carolina to see her and spend as much time with her as we could. Sadly she lost her fight on May 31st. It is so hard to watch someone struggle for so long and then succumb to this horrible disease. She was such a fighter. Her kidneys were shutting down and she held out for days because (I'm sure) something inside told her that her family was coming down to see her one last time. She got to pass knowing that her family was around her and that she was so loved. That gives my family peace.
With that being said I have to say this. Life happens. I've been stressing and striving for months to reach my first goal in my weight loss journey, All this is so small compared to the big picture. These past few weeks I have gotten to spend time with family that I normally see once or twice a year. That's what matters right there. I ate bad, I didn't go to the gym, and I drank way too much. Did I kick myself in the ass when I woke up the next day? Of course I did. I knew what I was doing was wrong but by god it was worth it. You have to live. This is a journey and along the way there will be bumps and twists and turns that throw you for a loop. You just have to get back on the right road and keep trucking. I went back to the gym today for the first time in a week. I did a spin class and it killed me. It felt good to sweat again. Now getting a good workout in is just a therapeutic to me as a glass of wine or a beer used to be. If I have a bad day at work I immediately want to sweat. Whether it be running in the park by myself or doing a class at the gym I want to get out as much frustration as I can.
I'm going to keep this short but hopefully I can begin to post more and get myself back on track with my accountability. I'm 10lbs away from my first major goal and then I will be in ONEDERLAND!!! I haven't been there for as long as I can remember. Maybe freshman year of high school?? If you are reading this I hope it motivated you to take a deep breath and realize you can get back on track. Set a small goal and get to it. When you reach that, set another. I'm down 30lbs total right now so 40 is my next goal. I started in February so as you can tell it is a process. You've got this!

Outside Motivation
Thoughtful Thursday.....
So last week my motivation was at a big fat zero to work out. All the classes at the gym were cancelled because of our horrible weather and I was just not in the mood. I did Jillian Michaels "30 Day Shred" in the morning just to have some type of workout. If you have ever done this DVD it is a good workout but I have to mute Jillian. She can be motivating at times but at 7:00 in the morning I'm not trying to her listen to her say, "Keep doing jumping jacks! I have 300lb people that can do jumping jacks!" Ugh that will be enough from you lady. I'm chubby, jumping jacks kill my knees, and it is way too early for me to listen to that nonsense!
Fast forward to this week. On Monday I went back to the gym. I did a 30 minute treadmill warm up, 10 minutes on the Stair Climber (OMG first time on that..), and a short kettle bell workout. Tuesday I was back in spin and it felt amazing after a week off! Yesterday and today it has been GORGEOUS outside so I took my butt (and my mutts) to Iroquois Park to get some fresh air. Iroquois Park is one of the prettiest parks you've ever set foot in. Any park that has a lookout where you can see this gorgeous city is pretty in my book! The loop around the park is about 3&1/2 miles with lots of hills. I am not a runner by any means but today I ran down the hills and walked up the rest. It feels good to get the fresh air in my lungs and the sunshine on my skin. It has been so gloom and doom lately this sunshine is highly welcomed!
So I told you all that to tell you this. Just start working out. Just go to the gym. Just go outside and walk or run on pretty days. Just start. That is all it takes. Get up off the couch and decide, "Hey I'm going to work out today." That's how I started. One day I looked at myself in the mirror and told myself I was going to work out. Everything I have read said it takes four weeks for you to notice your body changing and eight weeks for others to notice. I completely agree with that. I started my journey in February. I lost 10lbs and 10 overall inches and I could tell. I never heard anything from my husband. I never heard anything from my friends. Here it is March and now I've heard a few times, "Are you losing weight?" WHY YES I AM! When this question is asked it makes me realize I am doing the right thing. I am moving in the right direction. Working out is a habit now. I go to the gym five days a week. I try to alternate different classes and workouts to change it up. I want to tone as much as I want to drop the weight. I know I will never be "skinny" because I am not built like that but there are things I can be. I can be toned, I can be fit, and I can be motivating to someone who feels like I did earlier this year.
Just a thought....

Spin Obsession
Have you ever wandered aimlessly through the gym staring at everything? There are all kinds of random machines sitting there and intimidating you with their shiny metal frames, cables, and heavy weights attached. If you are anything like me you approach some of these machines and you look at the instructions, climb on, and try not to make a jack ass out of yourself while you figure out how much weight you can actually lift before you injure yourself. I know machines are great workouts that get you ripped up but no matter how motivating my Pandora playlist is that day after about 20 minutes of making my rounds on machines I am done. I have lost all interest and I am ready to go. I need something that peaks my interests and keeps me motivated and moving. Hence where my new obsession has come into play....
Hi, my name is Elizabeth and I am addicted to spin classes.
I tried my first spin class at the YMCA about two years ago. I went with a friend who was a member and I really liked the class but the YMCA was a little too pricey for our budget. At the time in my part of town there was only one other gym and it didn't offer classes so my love for spin fell by the wayside. In January of this year Louisville Athletic Club opened up in the South End and they offer group classes with your membership. I quickly joined and told myself I am going to try spin again. From the first class I was hooked.
There are so many benefits to spinning. It is a low impact work out which is great for bad joints. I have horrible shin splints (from years of softball and cheerleading) that flare up fast on treadmills and elliptical machines but with spin they do not bother me at all. You make your spin class what you want it to be. You adjust you bike levels so that your tension is what you feel comfortable with. If you don't want to climb a steep hill then don't. If you want to go at a slower pace then do it. You make your time on your bike worth it and when you are ready to challenge yourself you will know.
I think there are two huge factors to spin that motivate me. One is the instructor. My favorite instructor is a cute little bubbly thing who pushes you up hills and makes you want to work harder. You will find instructors who do more strength training while others do endurance and you need to find what works best for you. Some instructors you just wont vibe with and while the workout may be great you wont be as satisfied. Find the instructors that push you to better yourself and stick with them! The other factor in spin is the music. It is loud and fast paced and pumping you up to work harder. If a teacher has a bum playlist it makes it really hard to keep going. I constantly find myself spinning and moving to the beats so I need something to keep my attention.
Now spin isn't all sunshine and roses. The main issue I have with spin (and after a while you get used to it) is the bike seats are not comfortable. Ladies, be prepared because your nether regions will hurt for a few days after your first class. The first class you try when you leave you will say, "Oh hell no I am not going back." DO NOT LET IT STOP YOU FROM GOING BACK! Again you will get used to this and after a while it will not make your lady parts sore. After about three classes I was good to go. Another thing is the intimidation you feel in the beginning. Lets face it, big girls walk into a class with bikes and a bunch of people that are super in shape and we get nervous. I know I did in my first class. Push through. It doesn't matter if you are 500lbs or 125lbs get on that bike and just try it. I'm one of the plumpest people in my classes but I'll be damned if that is going to stop me from sweating my ass off and getting in shape. You have to learn to not look at your neighbor and how fast they are going and just pedal to the point where you are getting the best workout you can get. My last class I took I burned 832 calories in an hour....let me run that by you one more time, 832 calories IN ONE HOUR! I would NEVER do that in my own workout. I'm telling you the group setting, the music, and the instructor keep me going and that's why I love it.
So if you are considering giving it a try go to your local gym and ask if you can try a class. Most gyms will give you a visitors pass. Check it out and see what you think. Like I said it took one class for me to be hooked. Try new things and change up your work outs ladies, you never know what your body is capable of until you push it to the limits!
Happy spinning!

Meal Planning 101
It's almost Friday! Thank the good lord above because I am ready for a few days off of work. I feel like I need a stay-cation to get my head in a good spot but that whole "no vacation time right now" thing is kinda biting me in the butt! Oh well just part of being an adult :-)
So today I want to talk about a HUGE step that my husband and I took to not only eat better but to save a ton of money. What was that?? Save money. Yeah I know that caught your attention because (if you are anything like us) we need to pinch pennies any way we can. Let me tell you guys meal planning is where it is!
First things first I bought a dry erase monthly calendar that I turned into a magnet and hung on the fridge. This is my go to because I don't use a planner and as much as I try to use my phone calendar I'm terrible at setting it for stuff. I fill out all of our monthly plans (that are already in place) and then we start talking about meals. My husband gets paid the 15th and the 31st and I get paid every 2 weeks so we like to plan around certain paychecks for when we go to the grocery. That's when I jump onto Pinterest and get to browsing!
I like variety. I hate eating the same thing all the time and I constantly tell my hubs he needs to "expand his horizons" and try new foods. The man could honestly eat chicken or Hamburger Helper every night. We go through posts on Pinterest with different recipes and I always check out Weight Watchers and Paleo posts for healthy recipes. Then we start planning our meals. This is our calendar for this month (well part of it based on how our pay checks fall).
As we chose recipes we write down the ingredients of these meals on our grocery list. Once I have all my recipes planned I go through my grocery list and figure up how many of certain ingredients we need. For example this month we picked a lot of chicken recipes so I knew I needed to buy multiple bags of chicken breasts to make everything. Once I look at everything I add in stuff that may not have been in the recipes but its stuff we need for breakfast, lunches, and sides for the dinners (things like fruits, veggies, yogurt).
Now its time to hit the store. Two rules...1. NEVER GO TO THE GROCERY HUNGRY and 2. Stick to your list...that's all you need to know. I have started organizing my grocery list by my walk around the store so I know exactly what item I need to get in the aisle I'm in. This helps me from browsing and throwing additional stuff in the cart. Always remember the healthier stuff is on the perimeters of the grocery store. When all else fails shop the outside aisles! Once you have everything on your list get out of the store as fast as you can!
So down to the nitty gritty. Before we started this my husband and I were spending $250-$300 a trip to the grocery (mind you it is just me and him in the house). On top of this I would constantly be tired from work so we would have a ton of food and I would say, "Lets go get something because I don't feel like cooking." I never knew what I wanted for dinner and we would try to figure it out spur of the moment and we would make unhealthy choices. Now since starting this plan we have cut our grocery bill down to $150-$175 a trip! We only eat out on Saturdays and we are making much better food choices because we have preplanned our dinners and know the calories of every meal we are making. I also know what I need to take out to thaw in the mornings so I have NO excuse to not feel like cooking when I get home. This works guys, I am not kidding! If we can do it you can too!
I hope this gives you a little insight into meal planning. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. I mean you can save money and you can eat better, what more do you need to peak your interests??
Happy planning!

Mornings....
Mornings.....ugh. That's how I feel every morning. I really wish I was an early riser and a go getter before 10:00 am. I have to be at work at 8:30 every day and you would think after years and years I would be used to it. If my husband and I have to get up at the same time we mainly just grunt like cave people at each other until we have both showered and are ready to walk out the door.
I've never been a huge breakfast person. I'm never really hungry early and I'm frankly pushing myself out the door so I don't have time to make anything. I also do not drink coffee. I've never liked the taste of it and it doesn't matter how much "mocha vanilla caramel white chocolate frappe" junk you put in it I still think it tastes like plain coffee and it grosses me out. Well since I'm not a morning person, I don't eat breakfast, and I don't drink coffee, how in the hell am I supposed to wake up?
I have found my morning meal substitute that actually wakes me up (mainly because of the noise from my Magic Bullet), gives me energy, and helps me avoid Hangry Liz coming around at work around 11:00.
Here it is! All these ingredients go together to make a yummy chocolate shake/smoothie that is full of good stuff! My BFF turned me on to this Lean Shake and she swears by it so you know you have to trust your bestie! This GNC Lean Shake I bought at Rite Aid for $35. You can use this stuff as directed (2 scoops with milk or water in a shaker) or you can add ingredients and ice to it to make a smoothie. I like to bulk it up to keep me full longer and to give some extra vitamins. I put one scoop of Lean Shake, about a 1/2 cup of almond milk, 1/2 cup milk, and then whatever fruit and veggies I want to add in to my Magic Bullet cup and blend. Once that is all mixed together I add about 5 ice cubes and blend again to break up all the ice and make it smoothie texture.
I like to mix up my flavors so todays choice was 2 strawberries and 1/2 of a banana. I try to throw in a handful of spinach when I have it available (no taste and chocked full of vitamins!) but right now I'm out. Yesterday I did 1/2 a banana and a scoop of PB2. If you don't know what PB2 is you are missing out! PB2 is a powdered peanut butter. You add water to it and it makes a yummy peanut butter with like half the calories as the regular stuff. I bought mine at Kroger on sale for $3. I'm not a huge peanut butter person but I like the fact that I have an alternative that has less calories.
So there you have it! This is my morning go to! I have started cutting up my strawberries and bagging them so in the morning I just grab a bag and dump them in my Magic Bullet. The easier things are in the morning the more likely my cranky self is going to actually do them.
Here is a link for the GNC Lean Shake on Amazon.

There are a bunch of flavors available so I'm anxious to try a few more. Rite Aid has chocolate and vanilla but the GNC stores tend to have more flavors available in house.
And just for fun here is a link to PB2 if you aren't familiar with it!

Like I said I like to change things up so I'm sure I will come back to this topic with different reviews and recipes for these shakes. If you have any suggestions or have something you like using in your smoothies please feel free to leave a comment!

We Got A First Timer!
Hi guys! Welcome to my little outlet for my weight loss journey. On February 1st, 2015 I decided that it was time to stop acting like a slug and get motivated to lose some weight! On this blog I will discuss different things I'm doing/trying, workouts, recipes, you know just a hodge podge of nonsense in regards to this trip I'm on.
First things first let me say that I have struggled with my weight all my life. I've never been "skinny" and not to sound like a Negative Nancy I doubt I ever will be. My body size is thick or big boned whatever you want to call it. My main goal is to tone up and feel good about myself. I've done the crash diets and the fad workouts and all the nonsense in between but nothing has ever worked. I'm hoping this blog appeals to the ladies like me, and I know you guys exist!
So just a little about me....
I'm 30 years old...I still don't know how I got to this age but yeah it happened. I've been married to the love of my life for almost three years and we have two fur babies. I live in Louisville, KY and am a die hard University of Louisville athletic supporter! I'm a smidge of a social butterfly too so I love to go out on the weekends with the hubs and my friends. I love my city. Louisville has some amazing nightlife, restaurants, and there is always something to do around here. If you haven't been here you need to plan a visit ASAP! It's got all the southern charm you can imagine with a crazy uptown vibe. I can't see myself ever living anywhere else.
Since this is my basic introduction post I will keep this short and sweet. I hope to post daily to keep myself motivated. Please stick with me as I figure out how to upload pics, videos, and whatever snazzy stuff I can put on here. I hope this will be a place for support for people who just need that extra boost to get started down the road to getting healthy.
As of Feb 1st I am down 10lbs just from dieting and exercise. If you want to know what I'm doing check back!!!
